The false dilemma
French Polynesia and the Maldives are the two most requested destinations for premium honeymoons in Spain. They share the obvious: overwater bungalows, turquoise water, 5-star resorts, spectacular snorkelling. But beyond that, they are very different experiences. This comparison aims to be honest: there is no absolute winner, there is a destination that fits each couple better.
1. Geography and travel
Maldives: 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, south-west of India. Each resort occupies an entire island (some islands are so small you can cross them on foot in five minutes). Transfer from Malé by seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight, depending on the atoll.
French Polynesia: 118 islands spread across an area the size of Europe. Transfers between islands are made on Air Tahiti domestic flights (45-60 minutes between Tahiti and Bora Bora). The islands are large, mountainous and inhabited (Bora Bora has 10,000 residents; there is life beyond the resort).
2. Flight from Spain
Maldives: 11-13 hours with one connection (Doha, Istanbul, Dubai). Time difference: +4 to +5 hours. Manageable jet lag.
French Polynesia: 22-28 hours with two connections (Paris and Los Angeles, or Madrid, Mexico City and Tahiti). Time difference: -12 hours. Serious jet lag, especially on the way back. That is why we recommend never doing French Polynesia in fewer than 10 nights.
3. Type of experience
Maldives: resort-centric. You stay on your island and everything revolves around the overwater bungalow, the spa, the snorkelling and the resort's cuisine. Some operators offer excursions to local islands, but it is not the norm. It is a destination for disconnecting.
French Polynesia: island-centric. You move between islands with different personalities: Moorea (mountainous, accessible, perfect as a first stop), Bora Bora (the postcard, turquoise lagoon, Mount Otemanu), Tikehau (a coral atoll with a pink lagoon), Tetiaroa (The Brando, extreme eco-luxury), Rangiroa (the second-largest atoll in the world). It is a destination to experience several sides of the South Pacific.

Maldives
- Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani — no-walls eco-luxury, astronomical observatory, unlimited ice cream, no shoes.
- Cheval Blanc Randheli — LVMH, impeccable French aesthetic, the most spacious overwater villas.
- Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru — turtle and manta protection programme, phenomenal family programme.
- Six Senses Laamu — diving and surfing nearby, in-house dive centre with marine biologists.
- Joali Maldives — contemporary art in every villa, exceptional cuisine.
French Polynesia
- The Brando (Tetiaroa) — Marlon Brando's former refuge, 35 villas, extreme eco-luxury, no phones, no screens.
- Four Seasons Bora Bora — overwater bungalows with private balconies, views of Mount Otemanu.
- The St. Regis Bora Bora — the largest overwater villas in the world (130 m²), butler service.
- Conrad Bora Bora Nui — private beach, two lagoons.
- Hotel Hana-Iti — a private-villa project on a private island (exclusive use).
5. Gastronomy
Maldives: international and Asian. Top resorts have four to eight restaurants with different kitchens (Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean, Indo-Maldivian). Beach dinners are common. If you like variety, the Maldives wins.
French Polynesia: French with a fresh-fish base. Strong French culinary influence (this is French territory). A more limited menu per resort but with greater depth. Dinners on a private motu (a sandy islet in the middle of the lagoon) are an unforgettable experience.
6. Snorkelling and diving
Maldives: one of the best dive destinations on the planet, especially the southern atolls (Laamu, Vaavu) between May and September for whale sharks and manta rays. Snorkelling straight from the bungalow in many resorts.
French Polynesia: excellent diving, though not as top-tier as the Maldives. The highlights: diving with grey reef sharks in Rangiroa, manta rays in Tikehau, humpback whales in Moorea (August-October).
7. Indicative price
Maldives (8-10 nights): EUR 8,500-16,000 per person, depending on the resort. Soneva Jani and Cheval Blanc at the high end; other 5-star resorts at the lower end.
French Polynesia (12-15 nights): EUR 8,950-22,000 per person, depending on the islands and resorts. The Brando at EUR 1,800-3,500 per night, Four Seasons Bora Bora at EUR 1,500-2,800 per night.
French Polynesia is more expensive mainly due to the international flights and the recommended duration (12+ nights vs. 8-10 for the Maldives).
8. Which one to choose?
Choose the Maldives if: your honeymoon is 8-10 days, you prefer not to move from the resort, you care about varied cuisine, you enjoy diving and you value the sea-and-villa contrast over local culture.
Choose French Polynesia if: you have 12+ days, you want to combine several islands with distinct personalities, you value contact with local culture, you want something unique like The Brando and you do not mind long flights.
Consider Mauritius if: your budget is EUR 4,000-6,000 per person, you do not mind giving up the overwater bungalow, you value combining beach with safari (a South Africa extension) and you have 7-10 days.
The factor almost no one mentions
The deciding factor for many couples tends to be jet lag on the return. Returning from the Maldives is manageable (one groggy day). Returning from French Polynesia with -12 hours and two layovers requires three to four days of adaptation. If your honeymoon is fewer than 12 nights, French Polynesia forces you to burn many days in transit. From 12 nights up, it pays off.
