A luxury trip to Japan starts from €7,950 per person in 2026
A 14-day luxury trip to Japan with hotels from brands such as Aman, Mandarin Oriental, Belmond or Ritz-Carlton, traditional ryokans with private onsen, a private English-speaking guide for the cultural visits, internal transport by Shinkansen or business class and singular experiences (tea ceremony with a certified master, Michelin omakase dinner, access to gardens closed to the public) starts from €7,950 per person in a double room. The upper range can reach €18,000-25,000 per person on 21-day journeys with Aman Tokyo and Amanemu, dinners at Sushi Saito or Ryugin, and private experiences such as one night at Aman Kyoto with access to Kōdai-ji.
What makes the ticket vary so much between those two ranges is not Japanese culture, which is the same. It is the hotel category, the duration, the gastronomic add-ons, the internal logistics and the exclusive experiences you add. This article breaks down what actually makes up the price and what moves the needle.
What defines a luxury trip to Japan (and what sets it apart from mass market)
Hotel categories and their price range
Japan has three relevant layers of premium accommodation:
- Traditional luxury ryokan (Gora Kadan in Hakone, Tawaraya in Kyoto, Hoshinoya Karuizawa) — tatami rooms, private onsen in the suite, kaiseki served in your room by a nakai. From €800 to €2,500 per person/night.
- Top-tier Western hotel (Aman Tokyo, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, Belmond Tokyo, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto) — suites from 60-120 m², panoramic views of skyscrapers or temples, butler service. From €700 to €3,500 per person/night.
- Signature boutique (Aman Kyoto, Aman Ise, HOSHINOYA Kyoto, Amanemu in Ise-Shima) — unique pieces designed by Kerry Hill or Kengo Kuma. From €1,100 to €4,500 per person/night.
Private English-speaking guide (not a group tour)
It is the difference between understanding Japan and merely visiting it. A private guide with fluent English, cultural training and 10-20 years of experience costs €550-750 per day. On a 14-day trip with 8-10 days of guide, we are talking €4,500-6,500 in total for the couple. It is a substantial line, but it is the one that most shapes the memory of the trip.
Internal transport: Shinkansen Green Car vs. private train
The Shinkansen in Green Car (equivalent to business class) costs €120-180 per person per leg between the main cities. For singular experiences, the private trains Twilight Express Mizukaze, Train Suite Shiki-shima or Seven Stars in Kyushu are destinations in themselves: from €5,000 per person for 3 nights up to €15,000 per person for 4 nights in the Shiki-shima suite. Book 6-9 months in advance (annual lotteries).
Line-item price for a 14-day trip
The following ranges are per person in a double room, for an itinerary of Tokyo (4n) + Hakone (2n) + Kyoto (5n) + Osaka (2n). Personal expenses not included.
- International business class flights Madrid-Tokyo: €3,500-5,200 per person (depending on airline, season and lead time)
- Premium-tier accommodation (Mandarin Oriental, Gora Kadan, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, HOSHINOYA): €4,200-6,800 per person
- Ultra-luxury tier accommodation (Aman Tokyo, Aman Kyoto, Amanemu extension): €8,500-12,500 per person

Aman Tokyo
The suite in the Otemachi tower with views over the Imperial Palace is one of the most impressive hotel rooms in the world. 84 m² of tatami and Kurama stone, traditional futons and a black-basalt bathroom. The spa on the 37th floor is a reference. From €1,800 per night.
Aman Kyoto
Hidden in a cedar forest in the north-west of Kyoto, very close to the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Only 26 rooms and 2 private villas. Mixed onsen in the forest. The most luxurious ryokan built in the 21st century. A favourite choice for luxury honeymoons. From €2,200 per night.
Gora Kadan (Hakone)
Former retreat palace of the imperial family, today one of Japan's most famous ryokans. 39 suites, all with valley views and many with private onsen. The kaiseki is historic. From €900 per person/night with dinner and breakfast.
Mandarin Oriental Tokyo
Occupies floors 30-38 of the Nihonbashi Tower. 179 vast rooms (48 m² for the standard category), ten Michelin-starred restaurants, exquisite Asian spa. It is the finest gateway to modern Tokyo. From €950 per night.
When to travel and how it affects the price
Japan has four distinct seasons, and each one suits a different kind of trip:
- Cherry blossom (last week of March - first of April): hanami in Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara. Prices 40-60% above the average. Book 12-18 months in advance.
- Momiji / red leaves (mid-November - first week of December): the gardens of Kyoto at their peak. Prices 30-40% above the average.
- Summer (June - August): partial low season. Hokkaido and Nagano are ideal. Standard prices. Kyoto can reach 38°C with humidity.
- Winter (January - February): snow in Hokkaido (skiing in Niseko), onsen in Hakone and Kusatsu. More affordable prices outside New Year. Our favourite time of year for traditional experiences.
Exclusive experiences not sold online
These are the ones that mark the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. If your profile is culinary, these are essential. All are subject to availability and usually require 4-6 months of advance booking:
- Private tea ceremony with an Urasenke master (Kyoto) in a 19th-century teahouse, €700-900
- Omakase dinner at Sushi Saito (Tokyo, 3 Michelin stars), entry by invitation of a regular client only — €800-1,100 per person
- Omakase dinner at Ryugin (Tokyo, 3 Michelin stars) with chef Yamamoto Seiji — €500-650 per person
- Private visit to Katsura Imperial Villa (Kyoto) with a permit from the Imperial Household — €400 per person
- Zazen session in a Zen monastery in Kyoto with a monk instructor, followed by shojin-ryori (Buddhist vegan cuisine) — €350 per person
- Traditional kimono for men and women with dressing and hairstyling at a family atelier in Gion — €250 per person
